A Lied is a German song genre, a little dramatic piece accompanied on the piano. The songs were performed in smaller contexts at private enclosed events.
The Lied, the most intimate subgenre of chamber music was created primarily for private enjoyment. In Schubert’s Vienna the practitioners were often women who made music in their own homes.
