Franz Peter Schubert was born in Vienna, Austria, January 31, 1797, as one of fourteen siblings. Five of the children in the family reached adulthood.
His father, Franz Theodor Florian (1763-1830) was a hard-working, frugal, and dutiful teacher with high moral ideals, in tune with the contemporary zeitgeist. His mother, Elizabeth Catherine Vietz (1756-1812) had the task of women of the era to breed and raise fourteen children.
The siblings who survived childhood were Ignaz (1785-1844), Ferdinand (1794-1859), Carl (1795-1855) and Therese (1801-?).
