Schubert’s education.
In 1803 Franz entered his father’s school, and his musical talent was soon noticed. Young Franz and his brother Ignaz were taught by their father to play the violin and the piano.
Director of music Michael Holzer taught the talented Franz singing skills, church organ and basso continuo, according to the contemporary tradition.
The family’s male members devoted themselves diligently to playing string quartet, one of the era’s fads. At eight years of age, he made his first attempts at composing music. In 1808 the talented young man was admitted as a choirboy, so called Sängerknaben, in Vienna’s Stadtkonvikt. Soon, he settled in the monastery boarding school.
