Biography – Bild 8

Schubert follows his own path.

Schubert gradually developed his personal expression with Mozart & Beethoven as models and contemporary German poetry ideals. This led to a breakup with Salieri that held the old Italian masters highest. When Schubert sought a position as a music teacher, Salieri recommended another candidate, and the breakup became a fact. Schubert decided to leave the odious teaching profession and suspend his law studies to live as a free artist, despite the absence of alternative income. In 1817, he moved in with his friend and patron von Schober to devote himself exclusively to composition.

Their common friend, the opera singer Johann Michael Vogl performed Schuberts’ songs in Viennese high society salons. This surely contributed to Schubert’s increased popularity.
